You’re Missing in Action

A Poem

did you ever care,
or was that just my
delusion?

did you ever burn,
or was that just my
ego?

i tell myself you were mine,
once upon a time,
in some story long ago.

i remember long nights
when you haunted my dreams
as if you were a ghost after my heart.

but those days are gone
because you’re just that gleam
buried deep in my gaze, never to return.

did you ever love me,
or did i imagine that too
against a hallucination of stars?

did you ever think about me
on midnight trips to the liquor store
before you drowned all your sorrows?

i could have run for my life,
but i still wouldn’t have been fast enough
to escape you and your marvels and your heat.

i could have burned the forest —
all those wayward paths and trails,
those places we roamed in our better days.
