Your Eyes Were Full of Stars

A Poem

you wondered why
I couldn’t take my eyes off you
and I couldn’t help but smile
because you had no idea, did you?

your eyes gleamed
like they were cast in faraway stars
and I knew right then and there
that I’d follow you anywhere you’d go.

we were too young
for promises that big, I know,
but I still could have vowed
I’d always put you before anything else.

you would have laughed
if I had made such a lofty speech,
but I’d like to think I was an old soul
who could have tugged down the moon for you.

but I was naive
because I didn’t think of tomorrow
and all the obstacles we’d face —
no, I just thought of you and me, that was all.

I didn’t know
what I wanted
beyond knowing you
and loving you.

because I did, you know —
love you, I mean.
it sounds so stupid now,
but I was just a kid.
