You Were the One

A Poem

you were the one who wilted first,

leaves curling under the weight of heat,

all the vibrant green bleeding away

like a vein had been pierced to drain.

you were the one who said goodbye

when all the conversations we had

pointed to yellow brand-new beginnings

away from all the roadblocks of yesterday.

you were the one who slammed the door

and angrily told me that it was over

because you knew our love was gone —

the healthy green browning in spots.

you were the one who took the car

and drove it for miles away and away —

until you couldn’t run anymore

and you had to face me again.

you were the one who told me first

that you loved someone else entirely —

and all we could do was stare at each other

as our relationship crumbled around us.
