You Wanted, and I Gave You Everything I Had
A Poem
you said you wanted something true
and what more could I offer
beyond the rush of heartfelt gestures,
anything to prove I could be yours
you said you wanted more than love —
a connection, a spark, a stab in the chest —
and I was your willing victim,
ready for any ruse of affection
you said you wanted to touch stars
far beyond the reach of mortal men —
and I wanted to be the one
who could raise you to the heavens
you said you wanted a lover fine,
anyone who could make you brim
with passions deep and long,
and I was there for your taking any time
you said you wanted no promises
because words could shift to lies,
and here I thought every moment
was a vow, an oath, to better tomorrows
you said you wanted nothing more
than breakfast in bed and stolen kisses
between sheets of such milk and honey want —
but was I the one you pictured there?
