You Never Forget the First
A Poem
i bet you never realized
you made my heart race fast
as if it were a rabbit leaping
in a forest glen far off and away
you touched the pieces of me
that i’d never let anyone near,
and i always kept you in sight
as if you’d disappear at will
and there were days i hoped
you’d look my way just once
and there were nights i craved
to hold you close, so close
i bet you never realized
you could have flirted
past all my barriers
with just one smile
you inched past the boundary
without ever recognizing
what sway you had,
what power you kept
and there were days i wanted
nothing more than you
and there were nights i wished
on shooting stars for you
today i hold these memories
as if they’re shards of glass
i hope to piece back together
into a perfect, blameless whole
