You Kept the Castle

A Poem

Do you remember those long-ago nights
when we’d drink champagne from plastic cups
and tell the universe all our little secrets
as if someday we’d be famous?

Do you remember the way you kissed,
your eyes closed and your head tilted
heavenward and waiting just for me,
till we were both dizzy with want?

Do you remember how we laughed
every time our noses brushed
as if every touch were electric
and time had no meaning?

Do you remember those seashore days
when the sand held the imprints
of our useless wandering hours
till the water washed it all away?

Do you remember that sand castle
built by two scared little kids
who knew nothing of life
but who wished so hard for more?

Do you remember me, standing
atop a tower of pebbles and rocks,
while you whistled some sad tune
as if you were calling me back home?
