You Don’t Need Me

A Poem

i wanted something golden,
something true,
and there you stood,
transfixed by something far off.

i wanted something ethereal,
something to hold onto,
and there you were,
an angel painted from my darkest nights.

i wanted the world for you,
but you’ve grown stagnant —
lost in your own deceptions —
and it’s too much to walk away now.

i wanted every piece of you
in the fabric between lines —
and i didn’t care if i had to play
the villain every time to do it.

and maybe it’s true
that there’s nothing like
something this exquisite,
something this profane.

i like the game, it’s true,
but i think i’d rather
have your kiss
each and every time.

the autumn leaves bask again,
and i’m lost again,
and each day is another risk
for my beating heart to stand still.
