Wolfgirl
[Capsule: Song Freewriting]
The fur pelt she wore over her shoulders was from the first wolf she had slain herself. She had been too sickened to skin the animal herself, but a traveling huntsman had helped her when his wagon came down the path and she had stumbled, wide-eyed and bloodied, onto the dirt road through the trees.
Thankfully, the horse hadn’t been spooked enough to trample her to death. The huntsman had been distant but kind in his own way — though he hadn’t believed her at first that the wolf had been her kill. She didn’t say that the wolf had once been a man either; there were only so many things a man like the huntsman would have been able to believe. But every time she draped the pelt over her clothes — well, she remembered the too-human eyes that had dimmed to the land of death, all by her hand.
If she had known then — she might have cursed herself for the deed. But hadn’t it been self-defense? The wolf had lunged at her, spittle dripping from his open mouth, and his teeth had been so sharp that she might have bled out from one bite alone.
Here’s another Drabble Me This take. This one comes from that same song freewriting journal. This piece was written in July 2020, and the song that inspired it was “She Wolf” by Shakira.
