A Poem

oh, child, you’re going too far
down a road with no return,
but you aren’t afraid, are you,
as the sun glistens in your eyes?

we may think you’ve fallen astray,
but the stars shine bright overhead.

oh, darling, you’re going too fast
with no room for stopping —
but you won’t slow down, will you,
because your goal’s in sight?

we may see you as the wild child,
but you’ve proven us wrong before.

oh, honey, you’re running away
with no time for goodbyes —
and we were too late, right,
to be featured in your story?

we may never be able to follow,
but you’re still our wayward star.

oh, little one, don’t leave this way —
but you won’t listen to us now,
not after all the fights
and all those late nights.

we thought we could change you,
but we should have known better.
