Why I Won’t Ever Tell You What I Make on Medium Each Day

Let’s be real. Most of us read those “How I Made X Amount of Money While Doing X” articles on Medium — particularly if they pair up with our mutual passion, writing. It’s hard to resist the clickbait. You want to know how to make that much writing too! You want to master the art of the side hustle! It can’t be that hard, right?

But as soon as you’re lured in by the title and the picture, you realize: you’re not Jack with easy access to the golden goose in the giant’s house, but instead you’re still staring up at the beanstalk and wondering how the hell you’re going to climb that thing. And maybe you realize you’re afraid of heights. Or, to ditch the metaphor, you realize that your writing actually might not be that monetary at the end of the day. The coveted $100-a-month club seems like an entire universe away, and anything above that? It would be like trying to catch shooting stars with your bare hands while your feet are still planted firmly on the ground.

I get it. I read these articles too. Every one is a kick to my ego because the questions start fluttering in my brain like pesky flies. “Why can’t you be one of those people who can humble-brag about writing that obviously reached a landing point? Why are you still writing
