When the Stars Go Dark

Poetry

there are a million things I could say,

but none of them will hold you near

even as I look up to a sky so dark

that I can’t even fathom the stars.

you stole each blinking light away

when you departed last night

for another town far from here,

away, away, away, gone for good.

when I asked if you’d take me,

you shook your head and smiled

like I was still such a child removed

from any hint of harm or retribution.

tonight the stars don’t exist for me,

and maybe they never will again,

till I’m underneath a brilliant sky

with you by my side to have and hold.

for now the skies is a lifeless canvas

that I wish we could paint together.
