When Did I Ever Say I Was Yours?

A Poem

hey, good-looking,
thought you had something for me —
hey, good-looking,
don’t you think I deserve better than you?

it’s funny how we play these games
and act like we don’t care at all,
but every little ploy brings us closer
to all the things we can’t deny

but games grow old in time,
and people move on to other things —
someday, when we’re older,
maybe we’ll be honest with ourselves

love was a thorn — didn’t you know it —
and I plucked every rose just to get pricked
till my garden was empty, scattered with petals,
and I had to move on to other flower beds

“maybe you could join me” —
but you didn’t like my giggle
or my forthright attitude
and it was ashes from the beginning

hey, good-looking,
you didn’t pass me a glance
hey, good-looking,
you really didn’t care, did you?
