Winter is closing in on us, and seasonal depression is on track to spike leading into the holidays. Another added stressor is that we’re still in the midst of a pandemic that’s battering our mental health barriers all the time.

What little things can we do to help the pendulum swing towards the “happy” end? I have some suggestions.

Do something creative that distracts you.

It’s well-documented across the internet that creativity does a lot of good for our mental health. Just Googling “creativity and happiness” yields more than 73 million hits. The evidence is there!

“But I’m not artsy,” you may say. “I don’t write or draw. What can I do?”

The beauty of this is that adult coloring books and diamond painting sets exist for some of the limited creatives among us. However, I must stress that you shouldn’t box yourself in. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Some people journal and collage while others paint small ceramics or knit/crochet.

There’s a lot out there for you to find your perfect creative niche — even if you believe yourself devoid of creative energy.
