What It Means to Say Goodbye

A Poem

oh, cruel love,
why did you leave?

oh, you left
with no word or sign —
where did you go?

you were the best story
to curl up with
when night fell,
and how I miss
every quiet moment
we shared together

oh, lost love,
what made you go?

oh, you promised,
so what am I left with,
broken-hearted and alone?

you were the hero
and I was your heroine—
whatever you wanted me to be —
but now it’s over
like an unfinished ending
midway through the story

oh, my love,
did I scare you away?

oh, you whispered
goodbye like it was painful,
so why didn’t I see the truth then?

you were a shooting star
no one could hope to catch —
yet I still tried every time,
even if my hands came away burned,
and our ending came too fast…
