What Do You Do When You’re Not One in a Billion?

It’s a tale almost all of us can relate to.

I struggle with the fact that I have entered this world in obscurity and I will likely die the same way as well.

I wasn’t one of the royal babies everyone was waiting for, the gentry having my name on their lips as soon as it was announced — nor will I be a post-mortem sensation the likes of Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, or any plethora of creatives that have known true success only after death.

No one’s buying gossip mags to know what I’m up to.

No one’s vying for new info on what I’m doing creatively these days.

No one’s tuning into live television just to catch a one-on-one interview with me.

Hell, I’m lucky if my own father sends me a text each week just to check in with how I’m doing.

I’m not one in a billion for anyone. There are people who can do the same things I do. I’m not irreplaceable by any means, whether that be through words or deeds. My part-time job won’t miss me since there will just be someone else to fill the position (if it’s not phased out just for being a drain on the budget).

The one thing about me that is unique — my writing — is not sustainable because I’m not a one-in-a-billion writer…
