I knew my love for Princess Alda was impossible. I had been born to be her handmaiden — nothing more, never anything more.

When Prince Arhysand came from Meralta, I stood in the shadows as Alda knelt and took his hand only to place a kiss on the golden ring upon his finger. The people in attendance clapped, but I frowned as a piece of me ached.

Later, when I helped the princess undress for bed, she whispered, “I hate my lot in life.”

I longed to say, “Me too.”

Instead, I said nothing.

I played my part in the game.
