We Were Venom to Each Other
A Poem
we thought we’d go the distance,
but instead we took turns dancing
around each other’s cues and nods,
like we were in an old-time film reel
but we couldn’t see the end, could we,
because we were so lost in each other
that we failed to see the train derailing
in what we assumed was a passing phase?
we thought there was only one way out —
you or me, so much collateral damage —
but the tripping point came too fast,
long before we’d shed our rosy fog
but were we an end worth reaching,
no matter the cost or the repercussion,
because we found in each other
something worth trying to salvage?
we thought in riddles and acted out
our worst waking nightmares,
no matter how much they told us
we’d destroy each other in the process
but take it from me, love, how I’d like
to say hello to you again and again —
and don’t you think so too that we were
a train-wreck worth stopping to see?
