We Sing Until the Lights Go Out

A Poem

beat, beat, beat
that’s the rhythm that calls you home

beat, beat, beat
it’s a song you know deep in your bones

beat, beat, beat
we’ve always known the way, haven’t we?

yet the tone grows softer, softer,
till we’re dancing to the silence of shadows

but we keep on going, never stopping,
and we won’t go home till you’re back with us

it’s the history — the thrum of blood in our veins —
this tree with roots that go back generations

beat, beat, beat
sing it loud, sing it proud

beat, beat, beat
you haven’t lost your way

beat, beat, beat
there’s a nation standing behind you

let me raise my voice up high
and call you back to me

hear me, hear me, please, I pray —
so that you’ll know the way back home

it’s not over, we’re not done yet,
because this story’s still unwinding
