The red moon was supposed to be an omen. Good or ill — well, Charity didn’t quite know. But the smog around the moon was definitely not a sign of better things to come.
“Get away from there!”
Charity retreated from the balcony window and stared back to see her mother’s face illuminated by candlelight. Her mother’s eyes glittered in the play of shadows.
“Come here,” the woman said, beckoning Charity to come forward.
Charity obeyed, settling into the curve of her mother’s side and closing her eyes.
“Don’t worry. The end will be here soon.”
Her mother almost sounded relieved.
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
