A Poem

it was so easy to fall in love
with so pretty a face,
wasn’t it?

your heart tripped over itself
on your way over to buy her a drink.

girls like her, oh, girls like her —
you wanted to unravel her mysteries
and lay her bare across a table
as if she were made just for you.

it was so simple,
falling fast and falling hard,
before your brain could
even catch up.

but this girl had a secret side.

oh, you thought you knew her —
everything from her maroon lips parted
to the eyeliner making her green eyes pop
to the way her clothes shaped against all her curves.

small talk, shared drinks, quiet laughter —
oh, she had it all, didn’t she?
and smitten wasn’t quite the word
for what you were feeling.

your place or hers, oh,
it was the perfect lure for you.
