Troubled Waters

A Poem

do you care to take a dive in the pool
of life’s sorry expectations guiding
towards a path you may never want?

do you think it wise to swim freely,
away from the maddened crowd,
or should you be clustered like a reef?

do you see the way the waves tumble
over and over and over in ocean’s time,
nearing ever so close to a drowning point?

do you follow this path onward,
no matter where the waters take you,
or do you sink to the bottom’s relief?

do you deepen this sorry love affair,
this collection of senses made liquid,
though we already know it can’t end well?

do you take to those rivers of raw emotion,
the seep and sear and sting of it all,
rather than take refuge on the shore?

do you ever wonder if you might take
to that big blue beyond, beyond, beyond —
or do you stay in your internal streams?

answers — they are as deep as troubled waters
