I knew the woods were haunted — or something like that — but I didn’t think there was a witch living past the boundary of the trees.

One morning, though, I glimpsed movement through the gaps. I crouched down, thinking I was ready to lock eyes with a squirrel or a rabbit I might take down for dinner. Instead, my gaze fell upon a cloaked figure who appeared as if from smoke.

Then green eyes met mine, and I felt the pull of something in my stomach. It was like waking from a dream of falling.

I wished someone had warned me.
