Father told me I had to marry the first man who asked for my hand. But I passed twenty and nine years without an offer of engagement.
The problem wasn’t a dowry — my departed mother’s pearl necklace would suffice — but I saw the truth in my reflection in the wash basin each morning. My nose, broken from a childhood tumble, stood out as a crooked defect on my person.
Father said I couldn’t be buried with him, so I had to find myself a husband.
I figured a demon would do. Greater maids had made a pact.
