Thunder in the Veins

A Poem

do you hear it —
this race of starting,
lights flooding in space,
a perfect symphony,
taken too fast too soon?

never did you think
I could be a force,
but listen for the rumble
under my skin,
those maps in the flesh

adventure begins
when we least expect,
and I try to be lightning
caught and locked
in a bottle for all to see

do you hear it —
the whispers I spoke
into webs of meaning
while you sat
and digested your pain?

never did you think
I was the one for you,
and now we’re trapped
in the wrong story,
existing in glass houses

your narrative ends
just like all the others,
on the end of a lit cigarette,
the burn marks and the glory,
this fate you thought you’d avoided
