There were few who went to their deaths in peace.

It didn’t matter the age, the circumstance, the day, the hour. Most souls shook, trembling like scared rabbits, till they were released from their cages of flesh.

Each time, the angel of death smiled in a mysterious way. No one could have known the angel’s thoughts, but there was something sad about that expression. Perhaps there was a hint of regret there.

It didn’t matter. No one would be able to speak of it, whatever the truth would have been.

In this way, death remained the greatest enigma of all.

This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
