This Isn’t a Sad Love Song

A Poem

i don’t know if i believe in heaven,
but i thought i could glimpse it with you.

you say you don’t believe in angels,
but i thought i could be one for you.

i don’t know if i believe in miracles,
but i thought i could craft one for you.

you say you don’t believe in karma,
but then how did the universe lead you to me?

i can’t say i know what made us connect
over time and space and everything else —

but i want to know you in more than glimpses,
in more than the flow of words exchanged in secret.

and maybe there’s something to be said
for a life of wars waged and won and lost —

but i don’t want to fight, i don’t want to take up a sword
in a battle where i can’t even hope to triumph.

this isn’t a sad love song, maybe,
but perhaps that’s just my hope above all.

and these words mean nothing, maybe,
except to call across the universe in quiet echoes.
