There’s No Turning Back Now
A Poem
hey, babe, they said you’re out of style —
like you ever could be with that painted mouth
and windswept hair curling at the ends
hey, honey, don’t be shy too soon
because the boys have your number
and there’s no telling what they’ll think
hey, sweetheart, give us a smile —
you’re too young for wrinkles
and heartbreak that just won’t quit
hey, baby, you’re standing on thin ice
when he looks your way and just won’t
take no is no is no for an answer
hey, girl, why so serious?
you’re not gaining any favors
and your popularity’s in the toilet
but you don’t care, do you?
do you?
do you?
every day is just another charade,
a game for outwitting the men
who just won’t leave you alone
it’s a tough world
where women can’t speak
lest a man tell them to shut up
is there no turning back?
or do we have a sliver of hope
for the girls of tomorrow?
