There We Are Again

A Poem

the memories flash
in snapshot clusters,
till we’re lost and needy
in remembering days
we chose to leave behind

don’t tell me your lies,
and I’ll keep no secrets
because there we are again,
leading different stories

every time I wake up,
you’re the picture
that haunts me
and makes me recall
better moments, better days

don’t tell me it’s okay,
and I’ll pretend a little longer
that losing you didn’t cut
a vital piece of me away

how I wished for sanity
in those darker days
when you weren’t a light
but yet another thing
to try and escape

don’t tell me you care —
not like this, not like this —
and maybe this time I’ll say
that we’re better off alone
