I told my mother the cost of her wish, but she wouldn’t listen.

“I want to be young and beautiful! I won’t settle for less!”

She didn’t care that I had to shed blood or circle a star-ridden meadow under twin moons. She didn’t even care when I said she might never see me again.

I was willing to give her everything I had.

But the goddess refused.

“Child,” Althena whispered, “why would you do this?”

I looked up, barely able to keep my eyes open. “She’s my mother.”

Althena looked on with sadness.

“Then why do you weep?”
