The ghosts lingered long after the bodies had been cleared away.

On a once-battlefield could stand dozens of men and women whose lives had been clipped away like stunted wings on birds.

Through all these specters, the Wraith walked and passed her fingertips along the translucent membranes of those who had yet to depart to their appropriate afterlives.

If the phantom was lucky, the Wraith might even shed a tear. But such emotion usually only rose up when child ghosts wandered nearby listlessly, forever left unguided.

A soul — she did not have one, but she could imagine its weight.

This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
