Patrice laid down the silver ring on the bedside table. “I don’t need this anymore.”
Tom’s jaw dropped. “You’re giving it up? That ring cost a fortune.”
“It’s just a symbol,” she said. “I’m sure you’ll find another woman to give it to.”
“But I want you,” he insisted, taking her hand.
Patrice just shook her head. “You like the idea of me. My words, my conversation — not me personally. You just need someone to keep your bed warm.”
“Patrice, that’s not true — ”
“Shh,” she said, bringing a finger to his lips. “You know better, Tom.”
It was time.
