I didn’t know my mother had caused such pain to the realm of mortals.
I would have given penance or a tithe, but all I could offer were frozen tears as heavy as diamonds. Such things hardly had worth in the realm of humans.
Spring had yet to shake off its frost when my mother went into repose. It was a common thing, as normal to her as breathing was to all other creatures, but I still worried there would come a time when she never awoke.
Then winter’s mantle — and its crown of ice and thorns — would be mine.
