i was the secret
you wouldn’t share
with anyone,
but
it was as if i thrived
on every single moment
you called me clever
in the shadows.

i was the spark
of something new,
some kind of escape,
and
maybe that was fine
for a passing phase
even though a part of me
longed for more.

i didn’t mean
to make you a villain,
but perhaps i did crave
playing at being wanted.

and maybe other girls
would have called you out —
but where was the proof
in a game of smoke and mirrors?

i was hidden in plain sight,
the dagger behind the cloak,
and was it thrilling to you
that i wouldn’t ever say a word?

and maybe i should have said
no, no, no, no, no —
except i didn’t have the heart
to reject the…
