For the first parts of this narrative:

Marcela had always stood in the shadows of her best friend Etta Donaghue. The night of prom proved no different. Marcela’s pretty pink dress was nothing compared to the opulence of Etta’s ivory dress that made the soon-to-be prom queen look like real royalty.

And of course Etta walked around the room as if she were a tried-and-true queen greeting her subjects.

Marcela stood off to the side as she watched Etta’s boyfriend Landon Pierce weave his arm around the curve of Etta’s back.

But Etta didn’t smile at him or whisper a teasing remark like she usually would have. Marcela had known Etta long enough to see the strain on Etta’s face, her smile so wide it almost looked…
