“I don’t need magic this time. It feels like I can be anything I want.”

The fortune teller made a soft humming noise. “But will fate be kind to you? The cards are unsure, my dear. It seems you have a curse on your house.”

“Then I’ll just fight the curse. Surely that’s been done before?”

“It has,” the woman said, “but I’d say the odds are still against you.”

“What if I’m not alone?”

The woman smiled in approval. “Well, there’s an idea. Who would have thought?”

Allie grinned as if light were finally shining down upon them all.
