The Prince of My Heart
He was a beacon on the darkest night of my soul.
“Do you remember when we first met?” he breathes against my skin as we lay back in our bed, just enjoying each other’s company while the rest of the world passes by outside.
“No,” I admit, a little flustered by the way his dark eyes stay focused on me. I want to reach over and touch him, but I’m almost afraid he’ll disappear if I do.
He takes one of my hands in his and presses a kiss to my palm. “I was just a kid,” he says, “but you dazzled me right away. I loved you from the start. I knew true magic when I met you.”
“Then why did you keep disappearing?” I ask, my voice soft. “Why did you leave me alone?”
“Because I’m an idiot,” he says. “I was afraid of what I felt for you. I didn’t want to give up my independence — as silly as that sounds now. But I thought love was something I didn’t need. I had better ambitions. I could do without it. But — ” He takes a shaky breath. “But I can’t live without you. My dear Nona, I love you too much.”
I suck in a breath before he captures my lips with his. We kiss like there’s no war outside our door. We kiss like paradise is only a step away.
