The Nightingale’s Promise

100 Faces in 100 Stories — No44

--

The bird that sang to me at dusk was the one fixture of my lonely childhood. Even when my parents’ voices rose in anger, the birdsong broke through and brought a smile to my face.

Sleep would eventually come and wrap me in its warm embrace.

But one day the music disappeared. No longer did I have the comfort of the bird serenading me by nightfall.

In a fairy tale, I might have met a prince with the same color eyes as the nightingale’s plumage.

Alas, that never happened.

But the story? I wrote it to soothe my aching heart.
