The Mistake of You

A Poem

hey,
it’s been a while,
and I don’t know what to say
which can bridge that gap you left
when you didn’t even say goodbye

hey,
did you ever think
we might sprint the distance
together rather than apart
or was I just the one fooling myself?

hey,
heard you got a new girl
who keeps you up at night
in all the right ways
while I never left you sleepless at all

hey,
you could call me your mistake
wrapped up in pretty, torn paper
and I wouldn’t mind a bit
if only you called me yours

hey,
am I even worth your time anymore
or were you just playing the field
when I thought we were more
even though you proved we were nothing?

hey,
you won’t even look me in the eye
to tell me the truth in your throat
because you think you’re being nice
when really you’re just a coward
