i remember that midnight
when i couldn’t wake you up

the sounds of the television
seemed so far away
like an echo
pulsing,
pulsing,
till it faded
away

i remember that midnight
when you let a tear fall
as i held your hand
in the emergency room

the sounds of the machines
were like my heart
skipping beats,
tha-thump,
tha-thump
,
in time with
yours

i remember that midnight
when the worst came true

your body betrayed you,
blaring the alarms,
but i didn’t see
the signs

i remember that midnight
when my world tilted
off its axis

because somehow
i knew
