The Master

Life is like a game of chess.

The chess-master sat before me, ready to take my king. I bowed my head and decided to take it like a man.

“You know, you might have won,” he said conversationally, “but you had it in your head that you were going to own the board from the beginning.”

My head sunk lower. I felt as if I had just been bested by a kung-fu master.

“But all beginners make these mistakes. You go into a fight thinking you’re going to dominate. That’s not where you should start.”

Then he held out his hand for me to shake.
