The Little Things in Life
A Poem
it’s the ocean tide
as it teases at your feet,
restless water trying to claim
what it thinks it should own in full
it’s the sunrise
peeking through curtains
as you lay back against sheets
crumpled by warmth and togetherness
it’s the roses
he bought for your birthday,
the ones whose petals wilted
until you had to throw them away
it’s the book
you bought on vacation,
the one you cradle to your chest now
because the ending inspired so many tears
it’s the first kiss
after a long time away,
leading into a tight embrace
that almost makes you lose breath
it’s the last goodbye
you didn’t see coming
until it was too late, too late —
but it’s somehow bittersweet anyway
it’s the small gift
your coworker leaves at your desk
with a note saying she’s just thinking of you
and you’re consumed with…
