A Poem

once upon a time,
you punched the wall
and left a hole the size of my heart

i didn’t hear the blow,
but i felt the crack
as if it were running along my bones

that was the day i realized
you weren’t my prince

that was the day i recognized
you were the enemy

once upon a time,
a girl fell in love with a boy
and she didn’t know he would break her

she wouldn’t see the signs,
and she tried to tell herself
he was always angry for the right reasons

but then there came a day
when she saw the beast in the boy

but then there came a night
when she couldn’t hide herself away

once upon a time,
i thought i was the one
who could smooth away all your edges

i thought i could kiss away the pain
and wish away the hunger for more
and dream of all the better days ahead
