tell-tale signs, prophecies of old —
oh, what makes a hero?
do the deeds make the man,
or is the man born for greatness?

take any man — pick one —
and ask yourself if he has
the makings of someone
who could move mountains.

you might think him special
from a glance, just a glance,
and an old wizard might say
he’s the chosen one above all.

but looks are deceiving —
and you don’t know what heart
beats behind that muscled chest
or what thoughts circle like sharks.

this man may have the credentials —
oh, he saved a puppy once upon a time,
or perhaps he ran into a burning building —
but what truly makes or breaks a hero?

we may ask who are his villains —
but what about all that pressure
beating like a drum beneath his skin
as people call out his name as if in worship?
