It all started with a small altercation over coffee and orange juice.

Becky had been running around on high heels since 5 AM, and she would have rethought her choice of footwear if the heels hadn’t helped her score more tips throughout her shifts. It also probably wasn’t a good idea that she had snarfed down a bowl of cereal too fast in the backroom before she even started for the day.

A grizzly-haired man in a green flannel shirt flagged her down. “Some coffee, missie? You’ve passed me three times without offering to fill up my cup.”

“So sorry!” she sputtered out as she nearly tripped in getting over to the man, all the while trying to keep the heavy pots of coffee — one regular, one decaf — from spilling their liquid contents onto the floor. Mopping up coffee would just be another job to do before closing for the day. “Which would you like?”

The man took a few beats too long — It’s fine, it’s fine, she told herself — before he nodded towards the regular. “And I’d like that orange juice I ordered ten minutes ago too, when you get a chance.”

The man cast a pointed look her way as she poured his coffee, and she felt her smile begin to droop a little. She…
