One holiday season, I went with a friend to a restaurant experience where every patron was greeted by a “fairy princess” who would go around to the different tables and adorn each person with glitter.

It was a cute little gimmick, and I saw the way the children would laugh when the fairy princess tapped her wand against their heads.

For the families who couldn’t go to Disney World, I’m sure it was the kind of thing parents appreciated.

When the fairy princess came to our table, I took note of her because she wasn’t that much younger than me (in my twenties at the time). She played her character well — soft-spoken, airy, ethereal. When the glitter fell upon my head, she said she hoped all my wishes would come true.

Then she went away, gone like a gust of wind on a breezy autumn day, and I watched her continue on with her work for the day.

If I had been a child, I would have been delighted. I would have gushed to my parents how I wanted to be just like the fairy princess when I grew up. I would have twirled around and giggled to myself as I pictured dancing in a meadow filled with only sunshine and glimpses of magic.
