The Girl in Second Period English Class
She caught my attention right away.
The day the girl appears in my second period English class, it’s almost as if she’s magicked herself into being. My fanciful imagination takes in the vintage dress she’s wearing with neon green knee socks, and I concoct a story in my head that she’s been beamed down by an alien spaceship trying to garner friendly relations with humans.
Right before the bell rings, I quickly doodle a little sketch of her face surrounded by wavy hair and then slide the note over to her.
She glances at me, startled, before she puts her palm atop the paper and hides it from view. By the time Mrs. Franco is going through the agenda for today’s class, I see the girl unfold the paper in her lap.
An unmistakable smile comes to her face.
Halfway through class, I receive a note in return when Mrs. Franco’s back is turned.
Wanna have lunch together?
I don’t even send another clandestine note. Like a dork, I put two thumbs up as my answer.
The girl smiles so wide that dimples appear in her cheeks.
“Miss Humphrey? Is something amusing to you?”
