The day of my wedding, the servants spoke in whispers of the last bride to be married in Ravenswood Tower. Even as my maid curled my hair in ringlets and twisted the flower crown atop my head, I couldn’t help but overhear the conversation.

“Lady Maeryad looked even more lovely,” one said as if her words were in no danger of carrying. “It’s a shame what happened.”

“Such a fall,” another murmured, shaking her head mournfully.

“What’s that?” I asked, raising my voice.

The servants quieted immediately.

But in the mirror I saw another woman’s face reflected back at me.
