The Four Things on My Grown-Up Christmas List

Yes, I took inspiration from the song.

It’s only a few days until Christmas, and I’m currently going through my checklist of things I want to write pertaining to the holiday before it’s “too late” — at least for another year when the season comes around again.

And here sits an idea I mulled over, taking a cue from the song “Grown-Up Christmas List” by Amy Grant. If you haven’t heard it, here’s a sampling of the lyrics:

Do you remember me
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you with childhood fantasies
Well I’m all grown up now
And still need help somehow
I’m not a child but my heart still can dream

So here’s my lifelong wish
My grown up Christmas list
Not for myself but for a world in need

I remember when I was a kid and it seemed so monumental that I receive gifts on Christmas. When there were years where this didn’t happen (and there were a few), I felt so crushed because everyone — or so I believed in my childhood — received gifts on Christmas.

All these years later, though, I’d rather have some peace of mind than something that I may never use beyond a passing phase.

But, really, what would I wish for to make a broken world better? If anything could happen with the help of Christmas…
