The First Winter Without Him
#100StoryChallenge — No45
Lettie wasn’t supposed to be a widow at fifteen.
Then again, Jonas shouldn’t have been a dead soldier at age eighteen either.
The marriage, arranged by their parents, had been doomed from the start. She had pined for a servant, and Jonas liked the company of lads rather than any attention from the fairer sex.
Their wedding night, she hid in the closet and cried. Jonas had taken to the wine heavily enough that he fell asleep without her.
Then war broke out in the south.
Now winter was here again.
At least Lettie no longer had to play pretend.
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
