The Field Where Love Once Bloomed

A Poem

once upon a time,
i believed in love
as a natural occurrence
in every person’s lifetime

once upon a time,
i thought love
was the answer
to life’s problems

but now i’m older
and i know better

the prince will be the boy
who crushes your heart in his fist
when he decides your friend
is so much prettier than you

the fairy godmother will get drunk
the night before prom,
and she’ll have a nasty hangover
before she shows you the resale shop

and prom night smells like sweat and booze
instead of the enchanting night you wanted

it’s so easy to get disappointed
with the way reality tugs and pulls
at all your greatest expectations
before they circle down the drain

it’s so easy to lose yourself
in the dreams of what-if, what-if
as if such things have a place
in a world that hurts so…
